This work introduces an innovative approach to water resource protection and climate change adaptation, with a focus on multifunctional infrastructure solutions in urban environments. I explore the potential of retention-filtration and infiltration structures, such as floating rain parks, as a response to increasingly frequent and intense stormwater events.

The paper is based on my experience as the author and designer of the project:
"Protection of the Bokanjac Water Source: Gravity Wastewater Collectors and Pumping Stations with Associated Pressure Pipelines", developed in three phases as part of the technical documentation for the company Donat d.o.o. The project was initiated in 2013 by the City of Zadar and Odvodnja d.o.o. Zadar, as a response to the growing issue of urban flooding and the need for sustainable stormwater management.

As part of the project, I analyzed stormwater quantities across an area of 170 hectares within the third protection zone of the Bokanjac aquifer. I identified three main catchments and designed 12 rain parks covering a total area of 45,437 m².

These parks serve as retention-infiltration structures that prevent flooding, enable local stormwater absorption, and connect residents with nature.

Broader Significance of the Work

The presented concept integrates hydrotechnical, ecological, and urban planning elements, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to infrastructure design in sensitive and protected areas.
The goal is to strengthen urban resilience to climate change through sustainable, integrated, and multifunctional solutions.
