PROJECT: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF STORMWATER DRAINAGE THROUGH RAIN GARDENS AT FOUR LOCATIONS IN ZADAR COUNTY

As part of the STREAM-9 project, implemented by the Zadar County Development Agency ZADRA NOVA in collaboration with the CRTA d.o.o. team, a conceptual design was developed for a sustainable stormwater drainage system based on rain gardens at four locations in Zadar County.

The project addresses the need to relieve pressure on the existing stormwater infrastructure in urban areas through the application of nature-based solutions.

The main goal of the conceptual design was to identify opportunities to redirect stormwater from smaller, functionally defined areas—such as internal parking surfaces and short roadway segments—towards planned rain gardens, thereby reducing the hydraulic load on existing infrastructure.

Key project components include:

  • Analysis of stormwater runolff dynamics from gravity drainage basins, with an assessment of the potential to offload the existing drainage system. In certain cases, stormwater from internal surfaces within the target parcels was also considered.
  • Development of two design alternatives for sustainable stormwater drainage for each of the four locations—eight rain garden concepts in total—including the integration of pedestrian pathways.
  • Landscape planning that links the rain gardens with the surrounding area, incorporating the planting of vegetation suited to local climate and soil conditions.
